Job Description/Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise, direct, and coordinate the activities of nursing staff in the department, ensuring that nursing care is delivered effectively and efficiently.
- Manage nurse scheduling, ensuring adequate staffing levels and addressing shift coverage as needed.
- Train and mentor, the new nurses and healthcare assistants.
- Conduct staff performance evaluations, address performance issues, and support continuing education and training.
- Organize regular nursing team meetings to discuss the department’s performance.
- Represent the interests of the Medical Centre in respective leadership forums and cascade strategic decisions across the different departments.
- Participate in the identification of training needs for self and the nursing team and ensure participation in the training.
- Ensure the nursing team stays updated on the latest advancements in nursing practice through continuing education and professional development activities.
- Ensure the achievement of minimal learning hours for all team members.
- Oversee the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care for all patients within the unit.
- Ensure that nursing care is delivered in accordance with established clinical guidelines, protocols, and policies.
- Monitor patient vital signs, symptoms, and reactions to medications or treatments and communicate changes in status to medical officers, family members, and other healthcare providers.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ physical, emotional, and psychological health.
- Administer medications, treatments, and therapies following prescribed protocols.
- Provide wound care, including dressing changes and management of infection control.
- Assist with minor surgical procedures and perform basic medical procedures, such as venipuncture and therapy.
- Respond to medical emergencies and critical situations in the unit, ensuring that appropriate care is provided and additional resources are mobilized when necessary.
- Assist in the implementation of emergency protocols, including evacuation procedures and disaster management.
- Collaborate with doctors and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement patient care plans.
- Adequately, oversee the timely resolution of all customer complaints and concerns.
Patient Education - Educate patients on preventive healthcare measures, treatment options, and medication management.
- Provide guidance and support to patients and their families regarding disease management and lifestyle modifications.
- Offer counselling on reproductive health, family planning, and sexual health.
- Conduct health promotion activities and community outreach programs to raise awareness about common health issues.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records of patients’ assessments, treatments, and progress.
- Document medications administered, dosages, and patient responses.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient information and adhere to data protection regulations.
- Ensure the accurate completion of all administrative tasks related to patient care (e.g., discharge planning, referrals).
- Order and maintain nursing supplies and equipment for the unit, ensuring that items are stocked and functional.
- Prepare and submit departmental performance reports detailing the areas as shall be advised by your supervisor.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists, and laboratory technologists, to coordinate patient care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient progress and treatment plans.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of healthcare policies and procedures.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with company and clinical policies, procedures, occupational health and safety standards, and other regulatory standards.
- Conduct regular audits of patient care documentation and processes to ensure adherence to quality standards and submit reports as required by your supervisor.
- Report and manage incidents, accidents, or patient complaints, investigating root causes and implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Take a lead in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and outcome evaluations.
- Degree or Diploma in Community Health Nursing from a recognized Institution.
- Registered and with a valid license from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
- Post-basic training or certification in management, midwifery, or critical care is an added advantage, depending.
- Training or certification in hospital administration, public health, or emergency care.
- Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- At least five (5) years of clinical working experience.
- Proficiency in computer skills (especially Health Management Information Systems).
- Copy of national identification document(ID/Passport)
- Ability to lead a medical team, manage staff, and oversee clinical operations.
- Project management and report writing skills.
- Ability to handle budgeting and resource management for a department
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, patients, and families.
- Ability to make quick, informed decisions in high-pressure situations.
- Strong clinical knowledge and critical thinking abilities.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a hospital environment.
- Familiarity with healthcare regulations, nursing standards, and hospital protocols
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards
