Job Description/Requirements

Reporting to: Chief Executive Officer


Job Purpose:
To provide strategic and operational leadership in managing the SACCO’s credit function. The Credit Manager will ensure prudent lending, effective credit risk management, timely loan recovery, and compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements, thereby safeguarding the SACCO’s financial health and supporting member economic empowerment.

Key Responsibilities:
Credit Policy & Compliance
  • Develop, implement, and regularly review the SACCO’s credit policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to lending regulations, the SACCO Societies Act, and other compliance frameworks.

Loan Appraisal & Approval
  • Oversee the loan evaluation, approval, and disbursement process.
  • Ensure accurate credit risk assessments and timely loan processing.

Portfolio Management
  • Monitor the performance of the loan book, ensuring portfolio quality and minimizing default rates.
  • Analyze trends in loan uptake, repayment, and delinquency to inform strategy.

Recovery & Delinquency Management
  • Design and execute recovery strategies for delinquent accounts.
  • Coordinate with legal teams or third parties for recoveries when necessary.

Team Leadership
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the loan’s officer.
  • Set the unit’s performance targets aligned to SACCO goals.

Reporting & Analysis

  • Generate periodic credit reports for the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Provide recommendations on product improvement and risk management.

Stakeholder Engagement
  • Liaise with members, legal entities, regulators, and auditors on credit matters.
  • Provide member education on responsible borrowing.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or related field.
  • CPA, AKIB, or recognized Credit Management Certification is an added advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in credit management, preferably in a SACCO, MFI, or financial institution.
  • Proven experience in loan portfolio analysis, delinquency control, and team supervision.
  • Strong knowledge of credit policies, credit risk controls, and the SACCO regulatory environment.
  • Proficiency in core banking systems and credit scoring tools.
