Job summary
The Tally Clerk plays a critical role in the logistics chain by ensuring the accurate recording, verification, and documentation of all cargo and containers entering or leaving the facility.
Job descriptions & requirements
- Physically inspect, count, and verify incoming and outgoing containers or bulk cargo against shipping manifests, delivery orders, and gate passes.
- Accurately record container numbers, seal numbers, size, type, shipping line, and damage status in the Terminal Operating System (TOS) or manual tally sheets.
- Conduct thorough visual inspections of containers and cargo for structural damage, leaks, or broken seals, and document findings immediately with photographic evidence.
- Monitor and tally the loading and offloading sequences of trucks, trains, or vessels to ensure correct cargo dispatch.
- Identify and report any variances in weight, count, or description between the physical cargo and accompanying documentation.
- Work closely with Reach Stacker/ECH operators, gate clerks, and customs officials to maintain an efficient workflow in the yard.
- Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Studies, Business Administration, or a related field.
- KCSE C- (Minus) or its recognized equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of active experience as a Tally Clerk or Cargo Checker in a busy port, CFS, ICD, or warehouse environment.
- High proficiency in data entry and deep familiarity with inventory software or Terminal Operating Systems (e.g., Navis, CargoWise, or SAP).
- Exceptional attention to detail, high levels of accuracy under pressure, strong numerical skills, and excellent written/verbal communication.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in an outdoor yard environment and work comfortably across night, weekend, and holiday shift rotations.
