DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Solar PV System Installation
- Install
mounting structures on rooftops or ground-mounted systems, ensuring
proper alignment, tilt angles, and structural integrity
- Lay
out panel arrays according to design specifications while optimizing
for shading, orientation, and efficiency
- Safely handle and install electrical components while minimizing risk of damage or faults
Electrical
Wiring & Connections
- Perform
DC wiring (stringing of panels, combiner box connections) and AC
wiring (inverter to distribution board/grid connection)
- Ensure
proper cable sizing, routing, termination, and labeling in line with
electrical standards
- Implement
earthing/grounding and lightning protection systems
- Carry out safe isolation procedures before working on any electrical systems
System
Testing & Commissioning
- Conduct
pre-commissioning checks including polarity tests, insulation
resistance tests, and continuity checks
- Use
tools such as multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers to
verify system integrity
- Power
up and commission systems, ensuring inverters, batteries, and
monitoring systems function correctly
- Identify and rectify faults before final handover to the client
Troubleshooting
& Maintenance
- Diagnose
and repair faults in solar PV systems including wiring issues,
inverter errors, and performance inefficiencies
- Perform
preventive maintenance such as cleaning panels, tightening
connections, and checking system performance
- Respond
to service calls and resolve technical issues within agreed
timelines
- Maintain uptime and ensure systems operate at optimal efficiency
Interpretation
of Technical Designs
- Read
and interpret single-line diagrams (SLDs), wiring schematics, and
mounting drawings accurately
- Translate
engineering designs into practical, on-site installations
- Identify and escalate any design inconsistencies or site constraints to engineers/project managers
Compliance
& Safety Management
- Adhere
strictly to electrical safety standards, company policies, and
regulatory requirements
- Ensure
installations comply with EPRA guidelines and other relevant Kenyan
regulations
- Use
appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Identify potential hazards on-site and implement mitigation measures
Documentation
& Reporting
- Record
installation details, test results, and commissioning data
accurately
- Prepare
basic technical reports and handover documentation
- Maintain
records of materials used, system configurations, and maintenance
activities
- Provide feedback from the field to improve future designs and installations
Team
Collaboration & Client Interaction
- Work
closely with engineers, supervisors, and other technicians to
deliver projects on time
- Provide
on-site guidance to junior technicians or assistants when required
- Communicate
professionally with clients during installation, explaining system
functionality where necessary
- Support training or handover sessions for clients on system usage and basic maintenance
Continuous
Improvement & Learning
- Stay
updated on new solar technologies, tools, and installation
techniques
- Participate
in internal training sessions and safety briefings
- Actively work towards obtaining or maintaining EPRA certification
KEY
REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Diploma
or Certificate in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a
related field
- At
least 4 years of hands-on experience in solar PV installation,
electrical installation, or a closely related field
- Valid
EPRA certification or actively working towards certification (proof
of enrolment required)
- Strong
understanding of solar PV system design principles
- Proficiency
in DC and AC electrical wiring
- Experience
with safe isolation procedures and electrical safety standards
- Ability
to read and interpret technical drawings, including SLDs and wiring
schematics
- Hands-on experience using electrical testing tools (multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers)
