The Kenya & Somalia Mission delivers programs in Education & Child Welfare, Food Security & Livelihoods, and Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) in Nairobi’s informal settlements, Marsabit County, and Kismayo IDP and host communities.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Programs Coordinator, the WASH Technical Officer will provide technical oversight across assessments, design, implementation, supervision, and reporting of WASH interventions. This position is subject to strict compliance with SIF Child Safeguarding Policy, PSEAH Policy, mandatory induction, continuous training, and accountability measures.
Child Safeguarding Statement
This role carries Level 2 Child Safeguarding responsibilities with regular and direct contact with children, including in contexts without direct supervision. The successful candidate must undergo a criminal background check, provide satisfactory reference checks, and adhere fully to SIF’s Child Safeguarding Policy.

Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Support & Implementation
• Conduct WASH needs assessments and propose technical solutions.
• Lead the design, planning, implementation, and monitoring of WASH activities.
• Prepare and validate engineering designs, drawings, BoQs, and technical specifications for water and sanitation infrastructure.
• Supervise construction and rehabilitation works to ensure quality and compliance with SPHERE, WHO, UNICEF, and national standards.
• Develop technical specifications and tender documents.
• Provide technical expertise for proposal development and donor reporting.
2. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning (MEAL)
• Support development and application of WASH monitoring tools.
• Collect, analyze, and document WASH data, lessons learned, and challenges.
3. Coordination & Representation
• Liaise with community leaders, local authorities, and implementing partners.
• Represent SIF in WASH cluster coordination, working groups, and sector platforms.
4. Cross-Cutting Integration
• Mainstream gender, protection, disability inclusion, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability across WASH interventions.
• Promote accountability, safeguarding, and community participation in all program activities.
Qualifications & Experience
The position holder is required to have the following qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in water/environmental engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Water Management, or any other related undergraduate degree.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in WASH programming and technical project support.
• Proven experience in WASH infrastructure design, construction, and monitoring.
• Humanitarian/emergency experience required.
• Familiarity with SPHERE standards, WASH cluster guidance, CLTS, PHAST.
• Strong computer skills: MS Office, GIS, Google Earth, database tools.
• Proficiency with Kobo/ODK; AutoCAD/EPANET an advantage.
• Strong analytical, reporting, and proposal writing skills.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• Knowledge of child safeguarding and safe communication with children.
