Digital Organizing and Project Coordinator — African Tech Workers

Duration: 18 months

in the workplace to ensure that services workers have strong unions and the protections of collective agreements.

Together with our affiliates, we are building worker power across Africa’s digital economy, with a focus on data workers, content moderators, AI trainers, data labellers, BPO workers and other workers in the digital technology supply chain.

This position will play a critical role in developing our online communications strategy in Africa and supporting broader communications work globally.


Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Design and implement digital outreach campaigns to reach tech and data workers and other key audiences
      •   Create and execute campaign strategies in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment.

  •   Use digital communications as a core organizing and recruitment tool, not only as a tool for external narrative shaping.

  •   Manage and support the campaign’s social media channels and online presence.

  •   Assist affiliates in adopting new digital organizing strategies.

  •   Develop engaging worker-facing campaign content; strong web and graphic design skills are necessary.

  •   Collect and curate worker stories with appropriate consent and safeguards.

  •   Turn worker evidence and stories into clear campaign narratives. 

  •   Support public-facing communications that amplify worker voices and to hold accountable employers, policymakers, investors, tech companies and other relevant actors.

  •   Design and layout campaign materials, including interactive maps, infographics and data visualizations.

  •   Test messages, campaign asks and organizing approaches.


2. Database management and record-keeping

  •   Build, maintain, and regularly update worker contact lists, including email, phone, WhatsApp and other relevant channels.

  •   Create and maintain databases of worker stories, videos, consent forms, contact information and other campaign-relevant details.

  •   Maintain regular contact with workers and emerging leaders to support continued engagement.

  •   Ensure worker information, workplace data, stories, employer/client information and organizing leads are captured consistently.

  •   Help maintain clear and safe systems for worker consent, confidentiality and data protection.


3. Recruit and develop worker leaders

  •   Identify, recruit and develop strong worker leaders.

  •   Conduct systematic follow-up with workers who complete surveys, share stories or express interest.

  •   Coordinate online and in-person worker meetings where appropriate.

  •   Support workers to identify common issues, demands and potential campaign priorities.

  •   Track engagement, follow-up and leadership development.


4. Project coordination

  •   Liaise and work collaboratively with UNI Global Union and UNI Africa teams.

  •   Maintain and strengthen relationships with union affiliates, worker groups and allied organizations.

  •   Support practical pathways for digital workers to connect with unions and build collective power.

  •   Monitor, evaluate and report on project growth, trends and goals.

  •   Develop and execute measurable plans for expanding the digital campaign and produce regular reports on digital actions and digital growth.

  •   Contribute to broader policy, AI, tech supply chain and narrative work.

Required Experience and Skills

  •   Minimum two years’ experience in trade union organizing, grassroots political organizing, worker organizing or social movement organizing.

  •   Experience moving people from initial contact into participation, leadership and collective action. 

  •   Strong digital communications skills, including social media, messaging, online campaigns, and digital engagement.

  •   Proficiency in creating visually engaging content using programs such as InDesign, Figma, Canva and Illustrator and video production and editing skills.

  •   High level of digital fluency, including knowledge of and experience using programs to monitor analytics and build strategy based on them.

  •   Fluency in Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and online survey platforms such as Google Forms and Mailchimp.

  •   Demonstrated success maintaining and growing social media communities through paid advertising and social media optimization is an asset.
  •   Experience with, or drive to learn, best practices in online organizing, campaigns and communications.

  •   Ability and desire to work both independently and in a team environment.

  •   Experience liaising with, working with, and managing relationships with affiliated organizations and partners.

  •   Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of other languages is an asset.

  •   Persuasive writing and editing skills, with demonstrated attention to detail.

  •   Experience with analysis and report generation.

  •   Strong follow-up discipline and ability to maintain organizing systems.
