Job summary
As a Solar Design Engineer you will play a key role in developing and implementing solar energy projects.Leveraging your engineering and renewable energy expertise, you will design efficient, cost-effective solar systems that meet customer needs, technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and industry best practice.
Job descriptions & requirements
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct site assessments and gather data — solar
irradiance, shading analysis, structural considerations, and electrical requirements — to inform system design.
• Receive leads from Sales and business development teams,
gather client requirements, and prepare accurate, timely commercial and technical proposals.
• Develop plans for solar energy system deployment,
including monitoring and evaluation activities.
• Use CAD software and simulation/modeling tools to produce
detailed system layouts — panel arrays, inverters, mounting structures, and electrical wiring diagrams.
• Perform engineering calculations and simulations (yield,
string sizing, losses, ROI) to optimize performance, energy output, and cost-effectiveness in line with industry
standards.
• Design and specify battery energy storage systems (BESS)
and hybrid inverter configurations where required by client load profiles.
• Collaborate with sales, project management, procurement,
and installation teams to develop comprehensive proposals and technical documentation.
• Provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle
— design, planning, installation, commissioning, and post-project evaluation.
• Stay current on emerging technologies, industry trends,
and regulatory changes in solar PV and energy storage to drive innovation.
• Participate in customer meetings, presentations, and site
visits to explain design concepts and address technical inquiries.
• Support EPRA licensing, permitting, and compliance
documentation for projects.
• Any other related duties as required from time to time.
Requirements
Qualifications
• Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field; Masters degree an added advantage.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in solar PV system design
and engineering, preferably including commercial, industrial, or utility-scale projects.
• Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD or equivalent) and PV
design/simulation tools such as PVsyst, Helioscope, PVCase, or PV*SOL.
• Working knowledge of solar PV technology, system
components, battery energy storage systems (BESS), electrical principles, and performance factors.
• Familiarity with relevant standards and codes — NEC, IEEE,
IEC — as well as Kenyan building codes, EPRA regulations, and permitting requirements.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making
skills, with meticulous attention to detail and a focus on quality.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the
ability to collaborate across internal teams, external stakeholders, and customers.
• Valid EPRA T3 License (required).
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration, or
Engineer-in-Training (EIT)/Graduate Engineer status with the Engineers Board of Kenya, is an added advantage.
• Willingness to travel to project sites and customer
locations as needed.
• Valid driving license is an added advantage.
