Job Description (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Mater Hospital was opened in by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic Order of Nuns originating from Ireland, three years after registering themselves as the Registered Trustees of an entity under the Perpetual Succession Act (the succeeding legislation after independence). The “Sisters of Mercy” first set up a 60 bed general hospital to cater mainly for the poor, indigenous Kenyans, with the primary mission being general healthcare. The colonial authorities granted 12 acres of land in a swampy, mosquito-infested area, which has since become the Industrial Area of Nairobi. In , a 60-bed maternity ward was opened with antenatal, postnatal and immunization clinics attached in order to upgrade the quality of maternity healthcare available to the poorer segments of the Nairobi population. In , in recognition of the contribution of the hospital in training midwives to assist births in rural areas, Mater was chartered as a School of Midwifery.Main Duties Co-ordinates and directs the daily patient care operations of the Critical Care Unit Analyses workloads and skill requirements to meet patient care needs Assesses staff competencies and makes patient care assignments Delegates appropriate tasks to appropriate personnel, consistent with legal and professional guidelines and departmental standards Maintains clear communications with the Clinical Nurse Manager regarding unit needs and/or incidents Serves as a resource person on the unit Assists with patient care as needed Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance Providing second on call coverage, running of general surgery clinics with both preoperative and post-op care plans Co-ordination of morbidity/mortality meetings and Multi – Disciplinary Meetings Ensures the unit is well equipped with well-functioning equipment Prepares the budget and ensures procurement of capital items to specifications and adequate supplies for the unit at all times Carries out performance appraisal for department staff Ensures the competence and efficiency of staff in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude In liaison with HR department, manage staff welfare, training and development Creates a work environment that fosters high degree of personal integrity, team spirit and outstanding performance standards Reports on clinical issues to the Director Medical Services as required Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department and provide reports as required Required Qualifications for the Position Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) Minimum 3 years as a Senior Medical Officer Post graduate training in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine Minimum two years ICU /Critical Care Experience Ability to train & develop staff Supervisory experience Health Management Systems training is desirable Registered with KMPDC with a valid practicing license
