Job Description (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Mater Hospital was opened in by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic Order of Nuns originating from Ireland, three years after registering themselves as the Registered Trustees of an entity under the Perpetual Succession Act (the succeeding legislation after independence). The “Sisters of Mercy” first set up a 60 bed general hospital to cater mainly for the poor, indigenous Kenyans, with the primary mission being general healthcare. The colonial authorities granted 12 acres of land in a swampy, mosquito-infested area, which has since become the Industrial Area of Nairobi. In , a 60-bed maternity ward was opened with antenatal, postnatal and immunization clinics attached in order to upgrade the quality of maternity healthcare available to the poorer segments of the Nairobi population.Main Duties Conducting cardiopulmonary bypass using life support and other ancillary equipment and closely monitoring the patient’s blood flow and other vital signs during open-heart surgery Performing Cardiopulmonary bypass for cardiac surgery including: Administration of cardioplegiaAnticoagulation managementOperating, monitoring and maintaining the heart/lung machineAdministration of medications, blood products and anesthetics according to protocolRetrograding cerebral perfusion in conjunction with profound hypothermia and vacuum assisted venous return Auto transfusion and blood conservation Intra-aortic balloon pump operation Cardiopulmonary support Ventricular assisting device Heparin management for patients receiving perfusion services Blood gas and electrolyte determination for patients receiving perfusion services Cleaning, maintenance, trouble shooting of perfusion equipment Maintaining adequate inventory of replaceable items Assisting in entering of patient data into computer Assisting in the development of perfusion department policies and procedures Assisting with maintenance of quality control measures and development of procedure manuals Assisting in sedation of Cath-lab and Radiology procedures Participating in quality improvement initiatives within the department and providing reports as required Required Qualifications for the Position Certificate in perfusion training from a recognized institution Diploma in Clinical Medicine & Surgery or Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing from a recognized institution Higher National Diploma in Anaesthesia is preferred Valid Practicing license from relevant professional body Proficiency in computer application At least one experience as a perfusionist in a busy set up
