Job Summary
Flying Kites Foundation was established 16 years ago as a children’s home in Njabini, South Kinangop County, to support vulnerable children. Over the years, it evolved into a school and eventually became a Foundation with a broader focus. Among the beneficiaries of our initial program are young adults aged 19–25 who are now in tertiary institutions or navigating life beyond formal education. We call this group Launchpad, and our commitment remains steadfast in supporting them on their journey to self-sufficiency.

Our current Programs
Flying Kites Foundation is actively involved in the following programs:
1. Girls Empowerment Clubs in Public Primary Schools
2. Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response
3. Teacher Technology Training and Resources
4. Gender Equity Workshops
5. School WASH Evaluation and Support
Launchpad Initiative
The Launchpad program is dedicated to equipping the young adults with the tools, skills, and mindset needed to achieve independence and stability. While some have successfully completed their college education, others have faced challenges, including dropping out or cycling through institutions without completion. We have a total number of 20 young adults in the launchpad programs and 6 other students in the secondary and primary section.
To address these barriers, our focus is on helping each young adult identify and follow their unique path to self-sufficiency. This includes linking and referring them to resources, mentorship, and training programs to address gaps in essential life skills and professional growth.
Key Components of Self-Sufficiency
At Flying Kites, we emphasize the following pillars for personal and professional growth for our young adults.
1. Self-Awareness: Developing the ability to recognize and align one’s thoughts, emotions, and actions with personal values.
● Self-Reflection: Honestly evaluating personal strengths, challenges, and values.
● Self-Consciousness: Understanding and managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in real-time.
● Self-Insight: Anticipating and managing behaviors in various situations, including learning from mistakes.
2. Responsibility: Taking ownership of choices, actions, and their consequences
3. Resourcefulness: Cultivating problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles and identify solutions.
4. Reliability: Building trust through consistent follow-through on commitments.
5. Resilience: Developing the capacity to recover from setbacks and adapt to challenges However, it has been difficult for Flying Kites to achieve these components of self-sufficiency due to some challenges faced by the Young adults in our program, such as:
● Childhood trauma
● Lack of a support system
● Social stigma and identity issues
● Difficulty with independence
● Mental health struggles
● Drugs and substance abuse
● Lack of clear goals and vision
● Limited soft skills and professional readiness
Partnership Opportunity
To ensure the success of our Launchpad program, we are seeking a partnership to provide mentorship, training, and coaching services tailored to the needs of our young adults. Specifically, we seek support in areas not limited to:
1. Mentorship Programs: Personalized guidance to inspire growth and provide accountability.
2. Goal Setting: Equipping participants with tools for creating and achieving short- and long-term goals.
3. Self-Awareness and Vision Creation: Helping young adults define their purpose and direction.
4. Mental Health and Life Coaching: Strategies to address emotional well-being and foster personal development.
5. Career and Academic Guidance: Support in identifying career paths and navigating academic challenges.
6. Skills and Soft Skills Training: Training in communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and other vital skills.
7. Financial Literacy: Educating participants on budgeting, saving, and financial management Social Work Department
8. Employment skills: Vocational skills, job readiness, interview preparedness and interview skills.
9. Alumni networks and peer mentoring: Facilitate the development and connection with peers who have navigated similar circumstances for guidance and inspiration.
Our Goals and Objectives:
Our goals and successes for this coaching and mentorship program will be measured by:
● Expertise: Our focus is the program offers access to specialized skills and helps the achieve self-sufficiency through mentorship, coaching, family relationship building, linkages, and referrals to organizations that set up the students on a path to self-sufficiency and self-reliance.
● Soft Skills development: Our aim is to have the young adults struggling with mental health, substance abuse, and lack of resilience supported to focus.
● Impactful transformations: Our success will be defined as participants transitioning into stable jobs, completing education and achieving personal growth and goals. We also hope the program will change lives and help individuals who transition successfully to college, especially those who have dropped out of education and professional institutions.
● Self sufficiency and efficacy: Our focus is to have the young adults take control of their lives, make informed decisions, set clear, realistic goals, work and sustain progress towards self sufficiency.
● Resourceful Support: The program will provide a lifeline for the young adults who feel unsupported by giving them confidence and vision for a better future.
● Efficiency: That the programme helps in streamlining operations or addressing gaps in areas where our internal team may lack capacity. Important note: the participants vary in their readiness for independence with some requiring more intense support than others.
