About Mukuru Promotion Centre

Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC) is a faith-based charitable organization supporting communities in the informal settlements of Mukuru, South B, Nairobi.  MPC was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1985 in response to the community challenges in the Mukuru Informal Settlements.  It is situated at the heart of the Industrial Area, along the New Likoni Road just 1 km off Mombasa Road and borders the Mukuru Kayaba Informal Settlement.  

 

MPC endeavors to empower the Mukuru community through education, health, welfare and social rehabilitation services.  

About Mary Immaculate Clinic

Mary Immaculate Clinic is a health facility operated by MPC and provides quality outpatient healthcare services to approximately 100 patients daily. Services offered include:

· Pediatric services ,Antenatal Care (ANC) ,Postnatal Care (PNC) ,Medical consultations

· Laboratory diagnostic services ,Pharmacy services ,Minor surgical procedures

· Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) ,Nutrition services for malnourished children and adults


JOB PURPOSE

The Clinical Pediatrics Officer is responsible for providing comprehensive, high quality and patient-centered pediatric healthcare services to neonates, infants, children, and adolescents attending Mary Immaculate Clinic. The officer will assess, diagnose, treat, monitor, educate, and refer pediatric patients while promoting preventive and promotive child health services in compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines, Clinical Officers Council regulations, and Mukuru Promotion Centre policies.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Academic Qualifications

· Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery from a recognized institution.

· Higher Diploma in Child Health and Pediatrics or Pediatrics Clinical Medicine from a recognized institution.

 

Professional Qualifications

· Registered with the Clinical Officers Council (COC) of Kenya.

· Valid Practicing License issued by the Clinical Officers Council.

· Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

· Pediatric Emergency Care Training will be an added advantage.


Experience

· Minimum three (3) years of relevant pediatric clinical practice.

· Experience working in a hospital, health center, pediatric clinic, or child-focused healthcare facility.

Experience working with vulnerable children and underserved communities will be an added advantage


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clinical Care and Patient Management

· Conduct comprehensive pediatric assessments including history taking, physical examinations, diagnosis, and treatment.

· Examine, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic childhood illnesses.

· Provide emergency pediatric care and stabilization before referral when necessary.

· Prescribe medications and treatment plans within the professional scope of practice.

· Conduct daily review and follow-up of pediatric patients.

· Perform minor medical and surgical procedures as authorized by professional training and regulations.

· Request and interpret relevant diagnostic investigations.

· Refer complicated cases appropriately and coordinate continuity of care.

· Monitor treatment outcomes and adjust care plans as required.

· Ensure confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical clinical practice at all times.


2. Maternal and Child Health Services

· Monitor child growth and development.

· Conduct well-baby clinics and developmental screening.

· Support immunization services and ensure adherence to vaccination schedules.

· Participate in Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) programs.

· Conduct nutritional assessments and provide nutritional counseling.

· Support newborn care and postnatal follow-up services.

· Promote exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate infant feeding practices. 


3. Preventive and Promotive Health Services

· Provide health education and counseling to parents and caregivers on:

o Child nutrition

o Growth and development

o Immunization

o Hygiene and sanitation

o Prevention of childhood illnesses

o Management of chronic pediatric conditions

· Promote child safeguarding and protection practices.

· Participate in community outreach programs, school health initiatives, medical camps, and health awareness campaigns.

· Advocate for child health, nutrition, and safety within the community.


4. Documentation, Records Management and Reporting

· Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient medical records.

· Document consultations, treatments, referrals, investigations, and follow-up plans.

· Prepare and submit monthly clinical reports and service statistics.

· Participate in disease surveillance and public health reporting.

· Ensure compliance with Ministry of Health documentation standards.

· Utilize Microsoft Office applications and electronic medical record systems where applicable.

· Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information.


5. Telemedicine and Communication

· Utilize digital platforms such as WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, email, and video conferencing tools for telemedicine consultations and specialist referrals.

· Facilitate cross-consultations with pediatric specialists and other healthcare professionals.

· Ensure timely communication and follow-up of referred cases.

· Participate in virtual clinical meetings and case reviews.


6. Quality Assurance, Safety and Compliance

· Ensure compliance with Clinical Officers Council regulations and Ministry of Health guidelines.

· Adhere to infection prevention and control (IPC) standards.

· Promote patient safety and quality care practices.

· Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.

· Ensure proper medical waste segregation and disposal.

· Report adverse clinical events and incidents promptly.

· Maintain a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment.

· Stay updated on emerging pediatric healthcare trends and best practices.

 

7. Teamwork and Collaboration

· Work closely with doctors, nurses, laboratory personnel, nutritionists, pharmacists, therapists, and community health workers.

· Participate in multidisciplinary case management discussions.

· Collaborate effectively with local and visiting healthcare professionals.

· Supervise and mentor interns, students, and junior clinical staff.

· Attend departmental and organizational meetings.

· Support implementation of clinic work plans and strategic objectives.


8. Administrative Responsibilities

· Assist in planning and implementation of pediatric healthcare programs.

· Monitor utilization of pediatric supplies, medicines, and equipment.

· Contribute to departmental budgeting and procurement planning.

· Support outreach activities, medical camps, and community health initiatives.

· Perform any other duties assigned by the Clinic In-Charge or Management.
