About the role

We are looking for a strong and experienced consultant to act as short-term expert for a specific project focused on national industrialisation policy in Kenya. This role requires an independent consultant with deep knowledge of Kenyan industrialisation policy design and planning to advise governments and private sector entities on fostering competitive, resilient, and sustainable domestic industries. The successful candidate must be able to work autonomously, delivering high-impact, actionable policy recommendations in Kenya. The responsibilities are as follows:

Consulting services

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of Kenya’s National Industrial Policy and associated frameworks.
  • Analyse priority sectors over the past 15–20 years to identify competitive advantages and challenges.
  • Collaboratively select key value chains and sectors for in-depth market assessments, including competitive analysis, demand quantification, regulatory review, technological trends, barriers to entry, supply chain analysis, investment climate, economic impact modeling, social and environmental considerations, risk analysis, and policy recommendations.
  • Input into a technical policy drafting process based on the analysis and resulting strategy.

What we are looking for

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • 12+ years of experience analysing and advising on industrialisation policy design and delivery
  • Strong experience in Kenya and East Africa
  • A critical thinker with a strong understanding of best practice in policy industrialisation frameworks, policy design and delivery, with experience in practically applying this in African markets
  • Proficiency in a regional language, such as Swahili, is advantageous.
  • Excellent investigative, analytical and critical thinking skills, with experience analysing policy systems in East Africa
  • Ability to cultivate strong trust-based relationships within the company, with clients and with the wider political economy ecosystem.
  • A dynamic self-starter, able to work on their own initiative on complex issues.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence and empathy in managing cross-cultural relationships.
  • Commitment to a healthy, inclusive and sustainable working culture.
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline; economics, public policy, law – a postgraduate degree is advantageous.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are much less likely to apply for a position unless they meet every single qualification. So this notwithstanding, if you are excited about this role, we would love to hear from you. At Africa Practice, we are dedicated to building an inclusive, diverse and authentic workplace. You might just be the new team member we are looking for – for this or other roles.

Do you want to contribute to an influential and prosperous Africa, inspiring the world? We’re looking for Africa’s changemakers – smart people with strong analytical, advocacy, digital and problem-solving skills who can reconcile diverse perspectives to deliver sustainable change.
