Senior Medical Underwriter - Medical Insurance
Location: Expatriate position based in Port Moresby
An established insurer is seeking an experienced Medical Underwriter - Medical Insurance to play a critical technical role in the ongoing development, underwriting discipline, and performance management of its Medical insurance portfolio.
This is a senior technical role, suited to an experienced Medical / Health insurance professional who brings strong underwriting judgement, pricing insight, and portfolio management capability. The position supports profitable growth by ensuring underwriting discipline, pricing adequacy, and strong alignment between product design, claims experience, and portfolio outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Design & Governance
- Support the design, refinement, and ongoing maintenance of medical insurance products and benefit structures
- Translate claims trends and portfolio experience into practical product and benefit enhancements
- Ensure policy rules, exclusions, and benefit definitions are technically robust and operationally executable
Underwriting Rules & Pricing Discipline
- Develop and steward underwriting rules, eligibility criteria, and rating logic aligned with risk appetite
- Act as a senior technical referral for complex underwriting cases and non-standard risks
- Monitor portfolio performance and recommend corrective actions such as repricing, benefit redesign, or segmentation
Portfolio Performance & Analytics
- Establish and maintain portfolio reporting across products, employer groups, and distribution channels
- Analyse claims utilisation, loss ratios, and emerging risk trends
- Provide clear technical insights to support strategic portfolio decisions
Claims & Experience Feedback
- Work closely with claims teams to analyse cost drivers and provider utilisation
- Ensure underwriting and pricing assumptions are regularly tested against actual claims experience
- Embed a strong feedback loop between claims outcomes and underwriting decisions
Reinsurance & Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide technical input into Medical reinsurance arrangements and portfolio discussions
- Support engagement with reinsurers on underwriting frameworks, pricing assumptions, and portfolio performance
Distribution & Operational Enablement
- Provide technical support and guidance to underwriting, claims, and distribution teams
- Assist with technical training and ensure product rules are embedded into systems and workflows
About You
- Strong experience in Medical or Health insurance underwriting, pricing, or portfolio management
- Deep understanding of medical benefit design, utilisation risk, and claims cost drivers
- Highly analytical, with the ability to translate data into clear underwriting and pricing actions
- Comfortable operating autonomously as a senior technical authority
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills across underwriting, claims, finance, and leadership
