As part of its growing renewable energy portfolio, the company is seeking to recruit a highly competent and technically skilled Senior Solar Engineer / Renewable Energy Specialist to support the design, implementation, optimization, and technical oversight of commercial and utility-scale solar energy projects.
Position Summary
The Senior Solar Engineer / Renewable Energy Specialist will provide technical leadership in the planning, engineering, implementation, and operational management of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects.
The successful candidate will possess strong expertise in solar system engineering, electrical integration, EPC coordination, energy performance analysis, project execution, regulatory compliance, and renewable energy technologies. The role requires a hands-on technical professional capable of supporting the full project lifecycle from feasibility assessment and system design through commissioning and operational optimization.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate advanced technical understanding of solar PV systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), grid integration, project execution methodologies, and energy efficiency optimization.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Engineering
• Design and develop commercial and utility-scale solar PV systems in accordance with project specifications and international engineering standards.
• Conduct technical site assessments, feasibility studies, load analysis, shading analysis, and energy yield assessments.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, single-line diagrams (SLDs), layouts, and technical specifications.
• Perform system sizing for solar modules, inverters, transformers, protection systems, cabling, and battery storage systems.
• Optimize system performance, efficiency, and grid compatibility.
• Support hybrid energy system integration involving solar, battery storage, generators, and grid-tied systems.
Project Execution & Technical Oversight
• Oversee installation, commissioning, testing, and performance verification of solar PV systems.
• Coordinate EPC contractors, suppliers, consultants, and project stakeholders during project execution.
• Ensure projects are delivered within approved technical specifications, timelines,
budgets, and quality standards.
• Conduct technical inspections and supervise site activities to ensure compliance with engineering and safety standards.
• Identify and resolve technical issues affecting project delivery or operational efficiency.
Energy Performance & Operations Management
• Monitor system performance using energy monitoring and SCADA platforms.
• Analyze plant performance metrics including PR (Performance Ratio), specific yield, efficiency losses, and downtime events.
• Conduct troubleshooting, diagnostics, and corrective action planning for underperforming systems.
• Recommend system upgrades, optimization strategies, and preventive maintenance plans.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
• Ensure compliance with local and international engineering standards including IEC, NEC, IEEE, and relevant energy regulations.
• Support permitting, licensing, environmental compliance, and utility interconnection processes.
• Ensure adherence to occupational health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, engineering reports, inspection records, and compliance submissions.
Procurement & Technical Evaluation
• Support technical procurement processes including evaluation of solar modules, inverters, mounting systems, transformers, cables, and battery technologies.
• Conduct technical due diligence on suppliers and equipment manufacturers.
• Review vendor proposals, technical datasheets, warranties, and performance guarantees.
• Participate in contract evaluation and technical negotiations.
Financial & Commercial Support
• Support preparation of project cost estimates, BOQs, and technical-commercial evaluations.
• Contribute to financial analysis including CAPEX, OPEX, ROI, LCOE, and payback assessments.
• Support development of technical proposals and renewable energy investment presentations for clients and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
• Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy or Energy Systems is an added advantage.
• Registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) is highly preferred.
• Professional certifications in Solar PV Design and Installation are an added advantage.
Required Experience
• Minimum of 3–5 years’ proven experience in solar PV engineering, renewable energy systems, or EPC project implementation.
• Demonstrated experience in commercial, industrial, or utility-scale solar projects.
• Strong understanding of grid-tied, hybrid, and off-grid solar systems.
• Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with project lifecycle management and renewable energy project execution.
Technical Competencies
• Proficiency in PVsyst, Helioscope, AutoCAD, SketchUp, ETAP, or equivalent engineering software.
• Strong understanding of:
o Solar PV technologies
o Power systems engineering
o AC/DC systems
o Protection systems
o Grid synchronization
o Energy storage systems
o SCADA and monitoring systems
• Knowledge of energy regulations, utility interconnection standards, and electrical codes.
