JOB TITLE: TAILOR
REPORTS TO: HEAD OF SCHOOL
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
This is a part-time job. The trainer should be able to provide vocational training in tailoring and garment making to learners enrolled in the Ubuntu Life Foundation vocational programme, equipping them with practical, market-relevant skills that promote independence, employability, and income-generating opportunities.
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach practical tailoring and garment-making skills to learners in line with the vocational programme curriculum.
- Train learners in the use of sewing machines, tools, and materials, including measuring, cutting, stitching, and finishing techniques.
- Work with individual learners and small groups based on their abilities and learning needs.
- Support learners in producing vocational items such as garments, accessories, and other tailor-made products.
- Adapt training methods to accommodate learners with diverse abilities, including learners with special needs.
- Supervise learners during practical sessions to ensure safety, proper technique, and quality workmanship.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe tailoring workshop environment.
- Monitor and guide learners on discipline, time management, and good work habits.
- Assess learner progress and practical competencies and issue basic progress reports as required.
- Maintain records of learner attendance, training sessions, and completed work.
- Report learner challenges, equipment issues, or safety concerns to the supervisor promptly.
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and vocational staff to support holistic learner development.
- Adhere to Ubuntu Life Foundation policies, child protection guidelines, and code of conduct.
- Perform related work as required and any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
- Percentage of learners demonstrating improved tailoring and garment-making skills.
- Learner and participation levels during training sessions.
- Quality and usability of learner-produced tailoring products.
- Compliance with workshop safety and equipment handling standards.
- Timely submission and accuracy of learner progress records and reports.
- Effective collaboration with vocational and school teams.
- Punctuality, reliability, and adherence to assigned working hours.
JOB REQUIREMENT
Certificate, Diploma, or formal training in Tailoring, Fashion Design, or Garment Making
Practical experience in tailoring or garment production
Ability to teach and mentor learners patiently and effectively
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Physically able to operate sewing machines and assist learners safely
Professional, reliable, and punctual
Passion for vocational training and learner development
Experience working with children with special needs is an added advantage
