Big Life Foundation (BLF) is a community-based wildlife conservation organization operating in the Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystem, and its mission is to work on the ground in Africa, partnering with communities to protect nature for the benefit of all.
We are looking for a high caliber, self-driven and dedicated Lands Information Officer committed to excellence in providing efficient M&E services (specifically spatial database management) to the Organization. The Lands Information Officer’s main role is to support BLF’s M&E and Lands departments in developing and maintaining a Land Information Database.
Description
The Lands Information Officer is responsible for maintaining and managing land-related databases and systems to support evidence-based land administration, planning, and decision-making. The role ensures the integrity, accuracy, and security of spatial and non-spatial land information while supporting program teams with analysis, reporting, and visualization. The officer will also undertake data collection, data input, quality assurance, database updates, and integration with GIS tools and field operations.
The appointment is for an initial period of 12 months, with potential renewal based on demonstrated performance and the availability of project funds
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and update BLF’s land information database including land boundaries and subdivisions, land ownership, land-uses, geospatial datasets and relevant particulars.
- Populate and maintain land information database with all BLF land leases, including individual lease details and scanned copies of relevant documents.
- Engage with relevant partners and agencies to acquire data.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, completeness and compliance through data quality checks, validation, and standardization.
- Conduct data cleaning and integrity checks.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, ensuring data quality and confidentiality.
- Support the implementation of data quality assurance procedures by conducting field visits.
- Prepare periodic reports, presentations, and dashboards for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support digital transformation initiatives and integration of modern land information technologies (e.g., GPS/GNSS, mobile data collection apps, drones, remote sensing, sensors).
- Provide technical assistance and support in analysis and write-up of program evaluation results.
- Produce high-quality maps and visualizations for program teams, management, and stakeholders.
- Maintain documentation of system processes, data workflows, and standard operating procedures.
Basic Qualifications, Training and Experience
- At least a bachelor’s degree in; Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, Conservation, Development Studies, Geomatics, Geography, Land Administration, Natural Resource Management, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in M&E, database management, spatial planning or land information systems or related roles.
- Self-motivated, self-organized, and extremely detail oriented.
- Highly computer literate, with demonstrated proficiency in MS Office (particularly Word and Excel), GIS Software (QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth), and database applications.
- Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to travel and work in sometimes challenging and remote locations
- Experience with GPS/GNSS and mobile data collection apps (ODK, KOBO, Survey123).
Priority will be given to QUALIFIED and registered members of group ranches within Kajiado South.
